Choosing the Right Scuba Instructor

In your training to become a certified scuba diver, the first–and crucial–step is to choose a good scuba instructor. The local dive shops are often the best places to find them, although storefront dive shops that only rent and sell equipment also have their affiliated instructors and scuba classes.

However, do not take classes right away. You need to ask your prospective instructor about his credentials and his style of teaching. If the answer is “no” to any of these questions, you may want to search for another instructor.

  • Are you certified by a major diving association like PADI or NAUI?
  • Do you communicate well and explain scuba concepts in a way I can understand?
  • Are you patient and willing to spend extra time in case I need extra help?
  • Are you affiliated with a diving school, pro shop, or other recreational diving group where scuba lessons are offered?
  • Do you have a lot of practical diving experience?

Take note of how the scuba instructor answers your questions. His confidence and patience in his response counts a lot.
